Stamping part material testing is a comprehensive process that evaluates the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of stamping materials to confirm their suitability for stamping operations and end-use applications. Unlike acceptance (which is a receiving check), testing is a deeper analysis—often conducted in-house or by third-party labs—to validate material performance under stamping conditions (e.g., high pressure, bending, or stretching).
Mechanical testing is the most common type, focusing on properties critical for stamping. Tensile testing measures tensile strength (maximum force the material can withstand before breaking) and elongation (how much the material stretches before failure)—key for determining if a material can endure stamping forming without cracking. For example, low-carbon steel (SAE 1010) typically has an elongation of 30%, making it ideal for deep drawing. Bend testing evaluates ductility by bending the material to a specified angle (e.g., 180°) and checking for cracks—essential for parts that require sharp bends, like electrical connectors. Hardness testing (Rockwell, Brinell) assesses material resistance to indentation, ensuring it’s not too hard (which causes stamping tool wear) or too soft (which leads to part deformation).
Chemical testing is used to verify material composition, ensuring no harmful elements or impurities are present. For example, stainless steel stamping parts (used in food processing equipment) must have a chromium content of at least 10.5% to ensure corrosion resistance—tested via spectroscopy or wet chemical analysis. Microstructural testing (using optical microscopes) examines the material’s internal structure, such as grain size or phase distribution, which affects formability. For advanced materials like AHSS, this testing ensures the material has the correct martensitic or ferritic phases for strength and ductility balance. All test results are documented in a test report, which is stored for traceability. By conducting thorough material testing, manufacturers ensure stamping materials perform reliably in production and meet end-product requirements.
