The application of 3D Printing (Additive Manufacturing) has introduced a transformative acceleration capability within the stamped parts industry, primarily by enabling the rapid production of quick-change tooling components, prototyping parts, and crucial jigs and fixtures. While 3D printing does not replace the large, high-volume steel stamping dies, it significantly de-risks and speeds up the costly and time-consuming tooling development cycle.
One of the most valuable applications is the creation of 3D-printed rapid soft tools or prototypes. Before commissioning a final steel die, engineers can 3D print polymer or composite punch and die components to create soft tools. These tools are often used in hydraulic presses or small press brakes to stamp a limited number of actual sheet metal parts. This allows designers to quickly test the formability, fit, and function of the stamped part using the final material, providing immediate, real-world feedback on the part's geometry and process viability in a fraction of the time and cost required for traditional steel prototypes.
Furthermore, 3D printing is increasingly used for manufacturing quick-change, non-critical die components. This includes items like lubricant spray nozzles, material guides, ejectors, or even complex venting channels integrated into the die shoe. By printing these components in-house using robust engineering polymers or even metal powders (via Binder Jetting or DMLS), tool shops can significantly reduce lead times compared to traditional machining, speeding up die maintenance and modification cycles.
The technology is also vital in inspection and quality control. 3D printing is used to create custom-shaped checking fixtures and inspection gauges. These fixtures perfectly match the complex, curved surfaces of the stamped part, allowing production line personnel to quickly and accurately verify critical dimensions and features without relying on slower, more complex CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) setups. This ensures high-speed quality checks are integrated directly into the stamping line. The integration of 3D printing enables a faster, iterative, and less costly development process, allowing manufacturers to bring complex stamped parts to market with unprecedented speed.
